Suárez facing minimum four match international ban

FIFA are studying the case and are likely to take action over the incident that has had a world-wide media reaction. Any ban would probably only be at international level

Luis Suárez is facing punishment from FIFA, for his bite on Italy’s Chiellini in yesterday’s match that saw Uruguay qualify at the expense of the Italians. While there has been wild speculation since the incident that the player could be facing a lengthy ban (up to two years from all types of football according to some commentators), it appears more likely that the player will probably receive a four match ban, all to be served with the national side, though there is a chance it could be for more games.

Sources consulted by this newspaper said the bite on Chiellini was an aggressive act, but stressed that any punishment had to reflect reality. “What’s the difference between what Suárez did and a head butt, a deliberate elbow or spitting?”, our sources said, confirming that “the minimum ban would therefore be four matches”.

In any event in principle any ban would only be served with the national side and not at his club, currently Liverpool. While FIFA do have the power to ban a player from playing domestic football, that tends to only be applied in cases of racism, doping or match fixing.
