45,000 Madrid fans at Bernabéu to welcome James

The Whites' stadium was painted yellow as thousands of Colombians went to greet their countryman

The Colombian star said few words before hoisting up his number 10 shirt: "I hope to make everyone happy and win a lot of titles here. Hala Madrid!" The press box was full and the stands full of yellow Colombian shirts.

James then went onto the turf in the club's kit, performing tricks and causing pandemonium in the crowd as he hoofed balls to some 45,000 adoring fans. In addition to this, he kissed the badge, causing the loudest cheer of the night.

Florentino Pérez got proceedings underway, talking of Madrid's history, the memory of Alfredo Di Stéfano, who joined Madrid having previously played in Colombia in 1953, before welcoming the club's new star.

"He was outstanding at the World Cup in Brazil. He was one of the best players at the tournament. He was the top scorer and scored the best goal.

"James, you've never hidden your passion for our club. I'm sure you remember the first time that you visited the Bernabéu. Now your dream has come true. Your family know what it has taken for you to get here".

The Colombian ambassador to Spain, Fernando Carrillo then spoke on behalf of the country's president Juan Manuel Santos: "As a Colombian I am so proud at James's arrival. Our number 10 joins the elite of world football through the front door. First the World Cup, and now you're giving us more joy. In Colombia we have a huge affinity with Real Madrid, for both the club's schools and the legacy of Alfredo Di Stéfano".
